On Friday, OpenAI unveiled Pulse for ChatGPT, a new feature that would provide daily personalised updates based on users’ conversations, hobbies, and linked applications. Only Pro subscribers have access to the tool at this time.

“Pulse” is Sam Altman’s fave feature

“Pulse” is my “favourite feature of ChatGPT so far,” according to OpenAI CEO and co-founder Sam Altman, who announced the debut on X on Friday.

He clarified that before providing customers with a customised set of updates every morning, Pulse works overnight, compiling data from connected data, current chats, and expressed preferences.

According to Altman, “think of ChatGPT like a super-competent personal assistant.” As users communicate more about their hobbies or objectives, the function is more useful.

How the pulse functions

On behalf of the user, Pulse does asynchronous research, according to OpenAI’s blog. Every night, it examines chat history, memory, and comments before creating graphic cards with customised recommendations for the next day. These might be progress reports for long-term initiatives like fitness training, supper suggestions, or follow-ups on commonly discussed subjects.

By selecting “curate,” users may direct Pulse to provide particular notifications, such a compilation of Friday events or highlights of professional sports. Users may simply reject undesirable ideas and refine results with quick feedback choices.

Calendar and Gmail integration

In order to provide the assistant with further context, Pulse additionally provides optional interfaces with Google Calendar and Gmail. When linked, ChatGPT may propose restaurants for future travel, create meeting agendas, and provide birthday presents. The settings of the app allow you to control these integrations, which are disabled by default.

Limitations and safety

According to OpenAI, every update displayed in Pulse is subjected to safety checks to weed out any information that can be hazardous or violate policies. The business did admit that the tool is still in its infancy and might occasionally provide suggestions that aren’t appropriate.

To keep the experience current and targeted, updates are only shown for one day unless users decide to store them or request further information.

Towards a proactive AI future

Pulse is a step towards turning ChatGPT from a reactive chatbot into a proactive digital assistant that can plan, investigate, and recommend activities in real time, according to OpenAI. The business is already looking into ways to grow Pulse with other app connections and more intelligent scheduling, such providing reminders before to meetings or bringing up resources at the right moment.

In their statement, OpenAI stated that Pulse was only the beginning. “ChatGPT will change over time from being a tool you consult to one that subtly expedites the tasks and concepts that are important to you.”
