Dubai: You can include your local UAE address on your passport if you are a Non-Resident Indian (NRI) who has been residing in the country for a lengthy period.

This service, which was first offered in the United Arab Emirates in 2020, enables Indian nationals residing overseas who do not already own a valid or permanent address in India to add a local address in their home country. Here’s how an Indian resident in the United Arab Emirates can utilise this service.

You must submit an application for a new passport.

UAE expats who want to list their local UAE address on their passport would have to apply for a new one, the Indian Consulate announced in 2020. According to the notification, existing passports cannot have their addresses changed.

Step 1: Complete the application on your Indian passport to update your address.

The application can be completed in two ways:

1. In person: via BLS International Services UAE, the official outsourcing service provider of the Consulate General of India (CGI). You have to go to one of the BLS service centres, which are listed below.

You will need to complete the EAP II form (Application Form For Miscellaneous Services On Indian Passport) if you visit a BLS centre and ask for the form to update your address on your passport.

2. Online: via portal5.passportindia.gov.in, the website for “Passport Seva at Indian Embassies and Consulates.” The application to “re-issue an ordinary passport with a new address” can be completed online. After filling out the form, print it off and go to a BLS service centre to finish the next steps.

Step 2: For police verification, go to the BLS centre and give your address and other details.

If you completed the form online, you will need to turn it in when you go to the BLS centre. Your local address, which will appear on your passport, will be requested if you began the application process at the facility.

These consist of your home’s emirate, street name, location, house number, phone number, and email address.

In order to be verified by the police, you must additionally furnish one Indian address. You can now provide your parent’s or a relative’s address in India, according the Passport Seva website.

According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), police verification is a required step in the passport renewal procedure for Indian expatriates.

Step 3: Present the necessary paperwork as proof of address.

After entering your address, you will need to present the following paperwork to demonstrate that you are a resident of the United Arab Emirates:

1. A valid original passport.
2. If you are the owner of the villa or flat, the title deed or registered tenancy agreement. To be eligible for this service, you must have lived in the rental or acquired property for more than a year.
3. A legitimate Emirates ID.
4. A utility bill from your emirate’s water and electricity administration.

• Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) for citizens of Dubai.
• Abu Dhabi Distribution Company (ADDC) for citizens of Abu Dhabi.
• Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa) for citizens of Sharjah.
• Etihad Water and Electricity (ETIHAD WE) for citizens in the Sharjah region of Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, and Dhaid

At this point, you will also need to present your valid passport. Following approval of your request, a courier will deliver both your previously issued passport and the newly issued one to you.
