India Emerges as the Leading Global Milk Producer: Developments, Obstacles, and Aspirations for the Future

India has established itself as the leading milk producer globally, with a current output of 239 million metric tons (MMT). Union Minister of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Rajiv Ranjan Singh, announced in the Lok Sabha that the country aims to elevate its milk production to 300 MMT within the next five years. This expansion has been largely fueled by the Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM), which was initiated in 2014.

India’s Status as the Premier Milk Producer

The dairy industry in India has experienced significant growth over the years, positioning the country as the foremost milk producer worldwide. India accounts for more than 24% of the total global milk production. The average milk consumption per capita in India stands at 471 grams per day, which is considerably above the global average.
