CARE Hospitals Banjara Hills, Saves Critically Ill Patient with Groundbreaking Cardiac Care

Hyderabad, 18th March, 2025: CARE Hospitals Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, has successfully treated a 68-year-old patient, Mrs. Subhashini (Name changed) who suffered a life-threatening heart attack complicated by multiple medical conditions. This high-risk case highlights the hospital’s expertise in advanced cardiac care, innovative technologies, and a multidisciplinary approach to saving lives.

Mrs. Subhashini, a frail elderly woman with a history of rheumatoid arthritis, interstitial lung disease, collagen vascular disease, and diabetes, was admitted following an acute myocardial infarction (heart attack). Her condition was further complicated by critical blockages in her coronary arteries, left ventricular systolic dysfunction (heart failure), and a high-risk clinical profile. Traditional coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) was deemed too risky due to her fragile health and the acute nature of her heart attack.

Under the leadership of Dr V. Surya Prakasa Rao, Clinical Director & Head of Cardiology at CARE Hospitals, Banjara Hills, a multidisciplinary team of cardiologists, critical care specialists, nephrologists, and internal medicine experts collaborated to devise a life-saving treatment plan.

The team opted for a high-risk percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with stent placement, guided by intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) to ensure precision in addressing her complex coronary anatomy. To support her failing heart during and after the procedure, the team utilized the Impella SmartAssist, a cutting-edge mechanical circulatory support device. The Impella device, inserted via the femoral artery, maintained her blood pressure and cardiac output throughout the procedure and for 5–7 days in the intensive coronary care unit (ICCU).

Dr. V. Surya Prakasa Rao, Clinical Director & Head of Cardiology at CARE Hospitals, Banjara Hills, said, “Mrs. Subhashini’s case was a true test of our capabilities. By leveraging advanced technologies like the Impella device and IVUS-guided interventions, along with a multidisciplinary approach, we were able to save her life. This success story reflects our commitment to pushing the boundaries of cardiac care.”

Dr. Biju Nair, Zonal Chief Operating Officer of CARE Hospitals, added, “This case exemplifies the power of cutting-edge medical technology combined with clinical excellence. At CARE Hospitals, Banjara Hills, we are not just treating patients—we are redefining what’s possible in cardiac care. Our unwavering commitment to innovation, collaboration, and patient-centered outcomes continues to set new benchmarks in healthcare.”
