On Wednesday, India unveiled a set of robust diplomatic and strategic responses directed at Pakistan following the recent terrorist attack on civilians in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) outlined five significant measures as part of what officials termed a ‘decisive response to cross-border terrorism’.

1. Suspension of Indus Waters Cooperation: India has halted the Indus Waters Treaty, which allows for the annual flow of 39 billion cubic meters of water from the Indus River system to Pakistan. This treaty has historically represented cooperation between the two nations, even during prolonged conflicts.
2. Closure of Attari-Wagah Border: The vital Attari-Wagah land crossing, essential for trade and interpersonal connections between India and Pakistan, has been closed immediately.
3. Ban on Pakistani Nationals Entering India: The entry of Pakistani citizens into India has been suspended indefinitely, affecting both visa services and cross-border travel permits.

The Centre said Pakistani nationals will not be allowed to travel to India under the SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) Visa Exemption Scheme.
4. Expulsion of Military Advisors: All military advisors at the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi have been expelled, indicating a reduction in military diplomatic relations.
5. Reduction of High Commission Staff Strength: India has requested Pakistan to decrease its diplomatic staff in New Delhi to a minimal team of 30, significantly reducing the current operational capacity of 55.
